The National 4 & 5 Music Courses enable learners to perform challenging music, create original music using compositional methods and music concepts, and broaden their knowledge and understanding of music and musical literacy.
Pupils will develop their skills in the following areas:
Music Performance- on two chosen instruments,
Composition
Understanding Music.
Music Performance
At National 5 this section is 50% of the final mark.

Requirements | A one off, 8 minute performance on two instruments or voice.
Equivalent to Grade 2 or above. This will be assessed internally. |
An 8 minute performance on two instruments or voice.
Equivalent to Grade 3 or above. This will be assessed by an external examiner in February/March) |
Composition
At National 5 this section is 15% of the final mark.

Requirements | Develop a short composition(s) in any style, supported by a reflection.
This is internally marked.

Submit an original composition in any style, supported by a reflection.
The composition should last between 1- 2.30 minutes. This is externally marked.

Understanding Music
At National 5 this section is 35% of the final mark.

Requirements | Pupils will study a variety of styles of music and learn the concepts related to these styles.
This is internally assessed through unit assessments. |

This is externally assessed by a Listening exam in the May diet of exams. |
